Your new tattoo isn’t just ink - it’s art, and it deserves proper care from day one. Whether it’s your first piece or your fiftieth, following these aftercare tips for tattoos is essential. Use this tattoo aftercare guide to help your tattoo heal beautifully and keep it vibrant for years to come by adhering to these tattoo healing instructions.
Once your session is complete, we’ll wrap your tattoo using one of two methods: cling film (the traditional method) or medical grade second skin (such as Dermalize, Saniderm, etc.). Both options are included in our tattoo aftercare guide, designed to protect your fresh tattoo from bacteria, friction, and overexposure during the crucial early healing hours. For more detailed instructions, be sure to follow our tattoo healing instructions and aftercare tips for tattoos.
If we used cling film for your tattoo, here are some essential aftercare tips for tattoos: Remove the film after 1-2 hours. Gently wash your tattoo with warm water and a fragrance-free, gentle soap (like Simple or Dove). Pat it dry using clean kitchen roll (not a towel). Allow it to air dry for about 10 minutes. Then, apply a thin layer of unscented aftercare balm (we recommend InkDoctor or Proper). Follow these tattoo healing instructions and repeat this process 2x daily for the next 10-14 days to ensure proper care.
If we used a second skin bandage for your tattoo, here are some essential aftercare tips for tattoos: Leave it on for 24-72 hours (depending on fluid build-up - we’ll let you know!). When it's time to remove it, gently peel off the bandage under warm water - avoid ripping it off. Follow these tattoo healing instructions by washing the area with a gentle, fragrance-free soap. Allow it to dry completely, then apply a very thin layer of aftercare balm. Remember to moisturize lightly 1-2 times daily until the tattoo is fully healed, which usually takes about 2 weeks. It’s important not to reapply a second skin unless advised as part of your tattoo aftercare guide.
To ensure proper healing, follow these essential aftercare tips for tattoos. Avoid picking, scratching, or peeling scabs or flakes. It's also important to refrain from soaking your tattoo—no baths, swimming, saunas, or hot tubs. Additionally, steer clear of fake tan, scented lotions, or heavy creams that could irritate the skin. Make sure to wear loose clothing and avoid tight or running garments over the area. Lastly, protect your tattoo from direct sunlight while following these tattoo healing instructions.
Stage. What to expect
Days 1-3. Soreness, redness, and oozing are normal during the initial phase of your tattoo healing. These are important tattoo healing instructions to follow.
Days 4-7. Peeling and flaking begins—resist the urge to pick! This is a crucial part of your tattoo aftercare guide.
Week 2. Experiencing itchiness? That’s a sign of healing. Be sure to stay moisturized as part of your aftercare tips for tattoos.
Week 3-4. It’s common for your skin to appear dry or dull—this is totally normal as your tattoo continues to heal.
Month 1+. At this stage, the surface is fully healed, but remember that the deeper layers of your tattoo may still be undergoing repair.
Keep in mind that healing may vary based on placement, size, style, and your individual skin.
